Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

EFT is an evidenced-based mind-body treatment approach to the anxiety spectrum disorders as well as many other issues. It can help depression, addiction, phobias, and trauma.

How does EFT Work?

EFT uses the same theory base as acupuncture. Instead of needles, EFT uses tapping onĀ  key acupressure points to calm the nervous system. The client taps those points, calming the body, while they think of disturbing thoughts or memories or events. This allows individuals to tolerate or even embrace some previously anxiety-producing thoughts, events, and phobias. EFT is also highly effective. Studies show EFT is at least as effective as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) for treating trauma and PTSD.

The therapist works with the client to develop a script of phrases during a sequence of tapping at specific points on the body (see the blue diagram.) By repeating this anxiety-producing thought while calming the body, the client retrains their reaction to the anxiety trigger to a more calm state. Once learned, the client can practice this technique at home or use it on different stresses as they arise.
